HISTORY

The Smithsonian Institution Building, popularly known as "The Castle," was designed by architect James Renwick Jr. and completed in 1855. Built in the Norman Revival style with red Seneca sandstone, it serves as the headquarters of the Smithsonian Institution. The building houses the Smithsonian Visitor Center and administrative offices. Its distinctive architecture, featuring towers and turrets, has made it an iconic landmark on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
